Alumni Art Show Honors Patrick Wood

11.14.2014

The recent opening night of Pomfret School’s first alumni art show was a memorable tribute to an outstanding alum. Patrick Wood graduated in 2001 as the top scholar and went on to Stanford where he graduated cum laude in math. He became a programmer for Siemens in Berlin, traveled throughout Europe, and was accepted into Stanford’s prestigious computer science graduate program. But his sudden death in 2006 ended his dreams. His twin sister, Libby, brought them back to life at the Silver Circle Gallery through the donation of art from his classmates. Proceeds will benefit a scholarship in Pat’s name at Pomfret School. “We want hard working students to know that we’re here to make Pomfret School a reality for them. That’s how important it was to Pat and me.”

The show runs through November.

The opening night filled the gallery. Friends, family, and fans of Pat relived Pat memories as they admired the twenty-four pieces of art that were contributed. “I was so impressed with the art and thrilled to see such a wonderful community come together for Pat. We opened the show on our birthday. It was the best way to celebrate, to be with my brother through the people who knew us both during those developing years.”

“A sentimental and vibrant aura filled the rooms of the gallery space,” Lib said. People came from as far away as Georgia, Vermont, and the Boston area. Many were inspired by the quality of the artwork. They’re already thinking about what they might contribute for the next show.”

Four recent “Pat Wood Scholars” were in attendance: Caed Jones ’15, Evan Clarkin ’16, Dylan Clarkin ’16, and Gregory Rice ’17.

Special thanks for help with the show go to JP Jacquet and Louisa Jones of Pomfret School, Carly Martin from Silver Circle Art Center, James Martin from 85 Main, Bette Spielvogel from Pomfret Spirit Shoppe, Warren Rosenberg of Danielson Surplus Sales, and Melissa Dakai at Chase Graphics.

The artwork includes photographs, papercuttings, and jewelry and can be purchased online at www.patrickwoodprize.org. Contributing artists include Rob Campbell, Jared Vincent, Casey Arbor, Lilly Rand, Alexandra Sweet, Alex Arguimbau, Anthony Luckino, Joanne LaComb, and Libby Wood from the class of 2001, along with Ritsuko Hirai ’98, Amanda Schoppe ’99, Bennett Konesni ’00, Elaine Chen-Fernandez ’03, Chelsea Weiss Baum ’03, and Poon Watchara-Amphaiwan ’03.
